Synopsis
In 1942, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Canadian government enforced racist wartime policies against Japanese Canadians under the War Measures Act, including forced relocation, internment, and the confiscation of property. The Takeuchi family was among those uprooted and sent to the interior of British Columbia, where they were forced to live a self-sufficient life and endured poverty and discrimination before returning to Vancouver after restrictions were lifted in 1949.
Norman later studied at the Vancouver School of Art and built a successful design career in Canada, contributing to the Canadian Pavilions at Expo 67 and Expo '70, and later working for the Canadian Museum of Nature until retirement. Despite his accomplishments, Norman spent decades distancing himself from his Japanese heritage. He carried deep feelings of shame and disconnection from his identity, avoided his cultural background, and even found it difficult to face other Asians, rejecting his Japanese roots as well as his own appearance.
For decades, Norman lived with this sense of self-denial. However, in 1995, a major turning point arrived.
A short documentary that explores the life and artistic journey of Ottawa-based Japanese Canadian Nisei artist Norman Takeuchi, while tracing the history of Japanese Canadians in Canada.

1942年、真珠湾攻撃直後、カナダでは戦時措置法のもと、カナダ政府は日系カナダ人を対象に、強制的な分散移住、強制収容、財産の没収といった人種差別的な政策を実施した。タケウチ一家も自宅を没収され、ブリティッシュコロンビア州内陸部へ強制移住させられた。一家は自給自足の生活を余儀なくされ、差別、貧困に苦しんだが、1949年に規制が解除された後、バンクーバーへ戻った。
ノーマンはバンクーバー美術学校で学び、キャリア初期はモントリオール万博（1967年）および大阪万博（1970年）のカナダ館のデザインなどに従事。その後もカナダ自然博物館のデザイン部門で定年まで働くなど、カナダで充実したキャリアを送ったが、内面では自分の日系のアイデンティティを否定し続け、アジア人を見ると目を背けるほど、自身の見た目も含めて日本のルーツに対して羞恥心や断絶感を抱いており、自身の文化的背景を避けていた。
何十年にも渡り、自己否定を続けてきたノーマン。
しかし、1995年に大きな転機が訪れる。

Born in Osaka, Japan, she moved to Vancouver after high school and studied Film Production at the University of British Columbia, with a minor in French. After graduating, she began her career in the film industry in 2002 as a film buyer for a distribution company in Tokyo.
After relocating to Toronto in 2009, she worked at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and was also involved in founding the Toronto Japanese Film Festival, where she continues to work today. Her production credits include numerous film and television projects such as Pachinko and Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan. In 2022, she founded Momo Films Inc., a company dedicated to connecting Japan and Canada through film distribution, production, and consulting. In 2025, the company also launched a talent agency division. Shapes In Between: Norman Takeuchi’s Journey marks her directorial debut.
大阪生まれ。高校卒業後、カナダ・バンクーバーへ留学。
ブリティッシュ・コロンビア大学で映画専攻、仏語を副専攻し、卒業後の2002年、
東京の配給会社でフィルムバイヤーとして映画業界でのキャリアをスタート。
2009年にトロントへ移住後は、トロント国際映画祭（TIFF）で勤務。
また、今も働いているトロント日本映画祭の創設に関る。
プロダクションにおいては、『Pachinko』（Apple TV+）や『Age of Samurai』（Netflix）など、数多くの映画・テレビ作品に携わる。2022年には、配給・制作・コンサルティングを通じて日本とカナダをつなぐことを目的としたMomo Films Inc.を設立。2025からからはタレントエージェンシーの部門も設立。
「Shapes in Between: Norman Takeuchi’s Journey」が監督デビュー作となる。

Born in Montreal and raised in Calgary, Guillaume Carlier developed a passion for cinema at a young age while working at The Uptown Theatre and Casablanca. After earning a degree in English Literature in Montreal, he moved to France to study winemaking before realizing that filmmaking was his true calling and returning to Calgary. He later founded Kino Sum Productions. The company produces feature films, music videos, and documentaries, including CBC documentaries such as Borrowed From Nature, which explores the legacy of Japanese gardens in Western Canada, and Orphaned, about Alberta’s abandoned oil well crisis. More recently, Carlier produced the three-part documentary series Thunder: The Life and Death of Arturo Gatti, currently streaming on Super Channel. His latest producing credit is Lucky Star, directed by Gillian McKercher and supported through Telefilm Canada’s regional production program.
モントリオール生まれ、カルガリー育ち。幼少期にThe Uptown TheatreやCasablancaで働いた経験から映画に魅了される。モントリオールに戻り英文学の学位を取得した後、フランスへ渡りワイン醸造を学ぶが、映画こそが自身の進むべき道だと気づきカルガリーへ戻る。
その後、Kino Sum Productions （www.kinosum.com）を設立。長編映画、ミュージックビデオ、ドキュメンタリーなどを制作しており、西カナダにおける日本庭園の遺産を扱った『Borrowed From Nature』や、アルバータ州の油井浄化問題をテーマにした『Orphaned』など、CBC向けのドキュメンタリーも手がけている。
近年では、ボクサー、アルトゥーロ・ガッティの生涯を描いた3部構成のドキュメンタリー『Thunder: The Life and Death of Arturo Gatti』を発表し、Super Channelで配信中。最新のプロデュース作品は、Telefilmの地域支援を受けたジリアン・マッカーチャー監督の『Lucky Star』。
